Medunitsa

A house of 124 m² near Moscow on a cross-shaped plan: four honey-coloured timber gables under one copper roof, around a spiral stair.

Key challenge

A compact family house with three bedrooms that feels like a cottage: pitched roofs, timber, a stove at its heart, and every room with its own gable window.

Concept

Two equal bars, 4.6 m wide, cross each other. All four arms end in a gable under a 45 degree roof, and the four roofs meet at one ridge height. Windows sit only in the gable ends, so every room looks out in one direction. At the centre a spiral stair winds round the stove flue; a loggia is cut into the south gable and an entrance porch into the east gable.
